A recipe for Career Development

“If only there was such,” you may say. But in fact, there is.

Well, I believe that the secret recipe to a satisfying Career would look like this:

1 Cupful of Courage

1 Cupful of Commitment

1 Cupful of Values

1 Cupful of Passion

1/2 Cupful of Talents and Strengths

1/2 Cupful of Skills and Competencies

and a pinch of Luck

When you mix these ingredients together, the outcome is formidable. Many of us may have probably lamented at some point, “I can’t bake!” Fact is, anyone can bake. Most just simply gave up before they even tried. And those who tried and failed, could well have been missing the MAIN ingredients.

You may laugh, but to me, Career Development is very much like baking. You need to get the main ingredients right! For the longest time, we have always thought that having the right skills and qualifications will help us churn out our “dream” career. However, we forget the very word that in fact is a very key ingredient – the “dream”.

A dream is made up of four main ingredients. When we dream, we generate passion. With this passion, we find courage to act. This courage will sustain us with commitment and our values will guide us in our plans of action. Hence, in fact, the main ingredients are the very ones that drive us in our everyday pursuits to overcome hurdles and obstacles along our paths.

But besides getting the ingredients right, we also need to get the timing right, as well as the temperature right. Metaphorically speaking the temperature represents the environment in which we find ourselves in. At the end of the day, finding the right environment, means finding the right fit for us.

Without the right fit, the level of our performance and rate of personal growth will most likely decline over time. It would thus be hard to speak of career development, when there is nothing to dream about, to look forward to.

So I dare say. Career Development is very much like baking.
